SNL Digital Shorts: T&E Homage or Rip-Off?

Postby Son of Joy » Sat Dec 13, 2008 10:16 am

I was curious to see what people think of the recent SNL Digital Shorts. I've found that they've increasingly mirrored T&E Sketches, and judging from the cast members performing (the younger guys) I'm 100% certain that they we're inspired by T&E.

Now I love SNL and have enjoyed the show for years, but I feel that the T&E brand of humor that SNL is paying homage to (or are ripping off) belongs on T&E, and SNL writers and cast members should spend more time bringing back the sketches of the golden years (hell, I'll even take the silver years).

If I remember correctly Andy Samberg's stuff was a huge hit on youtube before he got on snl, so to say the viral videos rip off t+e might be going a little overboard. And I don't think t+e have a problem with it either because I think I remember them saying they loved hotrod.

Andy also mentioned that Awesome Show was one of the coolest things on tv when he was doing press for Hot Rod. Eric mentioned he saw the Virginia sketch as a small homage to their style, and was glad that it aired to a larger audience.
So the lonely island guys already had their own thing going on before T&E, and both of them seem to enjoy the others' work.

Plus, The Lonely Island and Tim and Eric have similar roots, a good example of this being their heavy involvement in Channel 101, which a lot of both Tim and Eric and The Lonely Island's early videos were made for and which itself shares a distinctive style.

I could, but you know., lazy

Thanks for the info all. I really don't have a huge problem with the similarities, though I do get miffed when people go nuts over a digital short on hulu while a much better Awesome Show video goes unseen. But I guess that's where I come in to suggest a lil T&E.

It just goes to show that something original is very short lived

the only good side to this is that I'm sure T&E are the kind of people to appreciate the fact that people want to be them, and yet never will XD

snl has clearly been influenced by tim and eric in the last couple of years. the pony express and balloon rides thing they're doing is fine to me and I see it as an homage also.

the digital shorts have become something I actually look forward to on the show and the main reason I started watching it again. I like andy samberg and he clearly has his own style of humor.
I like the kind of makeup that makes me a star

Hahaha. Have you guys seen the Jizz In My Pants music video? I love Andy Samberg. He's a lot like the guys from the State and that shit.

Don't forget to click the "watch in HD" button and put that shit in full screen. YouTube is starting to get their shit back together.

Jizz in my pants isn't very alternative. "2 Boyz" and "We Like Sportz" had their similarities to Tim and Eric, but I think overall The Lonely Island is a lot more accessible and has some simply bad and unthoughtful jokes.

What was the line, "That's steve, he's a total cunthole"? Is the joke supposed to be that it didn't rhyme, that it's shockingly explicit, that it's unrelated? It's not the kind of stuff Tim and Eric would put in their comedy, I think.

Jizz in my Pants, Dick in a Box and I'M ON A BOAT are all great songs.

I really do hope T&E inspire them because more people need to know how awesome they are.
I spread the joy to whoever I can!

It definitely wouldn't hurt, SNL is so bad right now.

If you haven't heard the Incredibad album, do so immediately. It is brilliant.

No kidding... When I rarely do watch it, I find myself hardly chuckling anymore. I don't know, I just feel that it's been going downhill lately.

Last digital short "Mother Lover" seemed a lot more T&Eric-ish than the other ones. Maybe more juvenile.

I had to bump this thread to share this great Digital Short:

http://www.hulu.com/watch/98344/saturda ... t-the-date

Will Forte in Lazy Horse Mattress mode. Seems most SNL fans hated, so of course we'll love it. Sure beats Kenan Thompson sketches. Ugh... It's like I;m watching All That! all over again.
